Gary Usher produced at Columbia in Hollywood. The working title was Sanctuary, and the final one comes from a line in My Back Pages. Hillman wrote and sang four songs on his own and co-wrote the title single. Crosby insisted on Mind Gardens and on a new version of Why, and he thought covering Dylan again was a step backward.

The album reached number 24 in the United States and number 37 in Britain. The singles So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star reached 29, My Back Pages 30 and Have You Seen Her Face 74. Billboard predicted the group would be riding high on the album charts again, and Richard Goldstein of the Village Voice found nothing new or startling in it. David Fricke called it the Byrds' first mature album in Rolling Stone in 2007.
