Icon Give Thank

The ninth volume of RVNG Intl's FRKWYS series paired the experimental musicians Sun Araw (Cameron Stallones) and M. Geddes Gengras with the Congos, and was made in St. Catherine, Jamaica. It came out on 9 April 2012 in the UK and the next day in the US, with seven tracks: New Binghi, Happy Song, Food Clothing and Shelter, Sunshine, Jungle, Invocation and Thanks and Praise. A film of the sessions, Icon Eye, was made by Tony Lowe and Sam Fleischner.

Andy Beta reviewed it for Pitchfork and called it the best psychedelic gospel album of the year, while allowing that it was not the best reggae album of 2012. He heard the Congos sound hesitant early on, until Ashanti Roy Johnson told Stallones that the pieces were like chants. He also noted that the group was by then a four-piece, with the touring member Kenroy Fyffe. Pitchfork's Ric Leichtung praised the tenor and falsetto harmonies of Happy Song, and the AV Club's Elliott Sharp, grading it C+, said it sounded more like a Sun Araw album with a few guest vocalists.

A live sequel, recorded at London's Village Underground with the Raw Power Band, was released by RVNG as the five-track Icon Give Life EP, a free download. Miles Raymer wrote in Pitchfork that its Fisherman was the one place where the added dub texture overwhelmed the song, and that Thanks and Praise, composed together by the Congos and their collaborators, was where the two sides met best.
