Released on 29 January 1982 as a double A-side with Precious, it entered the UK chart at number one and stayed there for three weeks, keeping the Stranglers' Golden Brown from the top. It was the band's third UK number one, and the Official Charts Company lists it as the tenth best-selling single of 1982. It was the band's only entry on any mainstream American chart, reaching 31 on Mainstream Rock Tracks.
The title echoes Nevil Shute's 1950 novel A Town Like Alice, though Weller said in 2012 that he had not read the book at the time. He has said the song is about his hometown, Woking. The Guardian's Greg Freeman described a stomping, Motown-inspired beat and a sense of pent-up rage and frustrated ambition. The song was used in the 2000 film Billy Elliot.
