Stoned & Dethroned

The fifth album: acoustic guitars, a full band and a duet with Hope Sandoval.
The Jesus And Mary Chain, 1994

Released
1994

Sessions began in January 1993 with the idea of an acoustic album, and took the better part of a year. It was the first time since Psychocandy that the band recorded as a full group, with Ben Lurie and Steve Monti. Shane MacGowan sings lead on God Help Me, and Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval sings with Jim Reid on Sometimes Always, the first single. Come On, in October 1994, reached 52 in the UK.

Pitchfork wrote that the band breaks out a few acoustic guitars and settles gracefully into a bunch of drawling Stones-type numbers, and that the Sandoval duet really is a standout. Sometimes Always reached 96 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album had sold 121,000 copies in the United States by May 1998.
