All four members wrote it, in the months when they rehearsed from midnight to four in the morning in the band room at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where Vannucci studied classical percussion. Smile Like You Mean It came from the same period. Flowers told Rolling Stone, "This is the story of trying to meet someone in a club." The song is in B-flat minor. Jeff Saltzman produced and recorded it, Alan Moulder mixed it and Brian "Big Bass" Gardner mastered it.
It was the second single from Hot Fuss. In Britain it reached 28 in March 2004, their first Top 40 hit, then three on its re-release in January 2005, and in America it peaked at 51 on the Hot 100. It came fourth on Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2004, and XFM's Top 100 Songs of the Decade placed it ninth in 2009. Billboard called it "wildly infectious." Brett Simon directed the video in California in February 2004, a performance video that pays homage to New Order's Crystal, the video that gave the band its name. The band played it on Saturday Night Live in 2005, with Topher Grace as host, and at the Sideshow Lollapalooza in June 2011. Paste ranked it sixth among the 20 greatest Killers songs in 2020, and setlist.fm logs 1,059 performances.
