Freak Out!

The song opens the first side of Freak Out!. It is an attack on the American school system, and its opening measures musically quote the Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, while the guitar solo between the first and second verses briefly quotes Richard Berry's Have Love, Will Travel. It was recorded at the first session, on 9 March 1966.

Zappa's liner notes dedicate it to Carl Orestes Franzoni and urge the listener to drop out of school before the mind rots, go to the library, then add that the song has no message. Zappa told Bruce Pollock in 1975 that he wrote it, with Brain Police, Oh No, I Don't Believe It and Bowtie Daddy, while living in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles. In concert Help, I'm a Rock was typically mixed with it.
