Tommy Erdelyi produced, with Steven Fjelstad engineering, and Alex Chilton added production and sang on Left of the Dial. Jesperson said Westerberg picked the title on a whim because he liked the name, and Westerberg disliked Robert Longo's cover. Can't Hardly Wait was recorded for the album but held over for Pleased to Meet Me. The record reached 183 on the Billboard 200.
The original mix was widely judged thin. The band blamed Erdelyi's hearing, which he denied, and Westerberg recalled thinking it sounded poor but not wanting to go back in. For Tim: Let It Bleed Edition (2023), Ed Stasium, once in the running to co-produce the album, made a new mix: he found parts Erdelyi had left out, mostly Bob Stinson's guitar, and stripped away much of the digital reverb. The box also holds a shelved January 1985 session with Chilton and the Cabaret Metro show of 11 January 1986, 65 tracks in all. Pitchfork gave the reissue ten.
