Westerberg brought little more than the central lyric to Blackberry Way, and most of the song was made up in the studio. Bob Stinson came in partway through a take without having heard it before, and it was played about once while Steve Fjelstad recorded. Westerberg then overdubbed 12-string and slide parts. He said he liked it because there was no time to think. Bob Stinson thought five more minutes would have made it sound far better, and Westerberg later dismissed it as overrated and half-baked.
Westerberg described its mood as about as melancholy as you can get while still being alive, and later tied it to the stress of the music business. Mehr suggests the central lyric may come from Westerberg's interest in palmistry. Morgan Troper of PopMatters ranked it the band's best song in 2021, Steven Hyden of UPROXX praised Bob Stinson's restrained guitar, and listeners of The Current voted it their favorite Replacements song in 2016. Bill Janovitz wrote that it influenced a generation of bands that followed. The upload in the hypersongs web is the album version.
Live
setlist.fm logs it 181 times, from G. S. Vig's in Madison, Wisconsin, in January 1984 to the Roundhouse in London in June 2015. The band dedicated it to Keith Richards when they shared a bill with him in 1988, and on the 1991 tour sometimes ran it into Sadly Beautiful. It closed the September 2014 homecoming at Midway Stadium, its first outing of the reunion, on the day St Paul's mayor declared Replacements Day. Touché Amoré, Calexico and Sunny Day Real Estate have covered it.
