Jack produced it on a Tascam 8-track analog machine in the living room of their Detroit home, and mixed it with Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders. It was completed in spring 2000. The title comes from the Dutch art movement. Jack admired the furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld, to whom the album is dedicated along with the bluesman Blind Willie McTell, and the name also nods to Love's second album Da Capo. The only single was Hello Operator, with a cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene on the B-side. The album also holds covers of Son House's Death Letter and a Blind Willie McTell song, Your Southern Can Is Mine.
It reached 38 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart in 2002, was certified gold by the BPI, and was included on NME's list of the 500 greatest albums in 2013. Ann Powers of the New York Times called it what many hip rock fans consider real music, and AllMusic's Heather Phares said it blends the band's arty leanings with enough rock muscle to back up their ambitions.
