Runt was billed as a trio of Rundgren, the drummer Hunt Sales and the bassist Tony Sales, but Rundgren wrote and produced all of it and played most of the instruments and sang the voices. It was begun at I.D. Sound in Los Angeles with Jim Lowe engineering, then moved to the Record Plant in New York with Jack Adams. Rick Danko and Levon Helm play on Once Burned. The single We Got to Get You a Woman entered the Hot 100 in November 1970 and peaked at No. 20 in January 1971, while the album reached No. 185.
In November 1970 a 12-track master that Rundgren had rejected was sent to the pressing plant by mistake, and about 5,000 copies of it were sold. Edsel reissued those alternate versions in 2011 and again in 2014, and Rhino issued a red-vinyl alternate mix in 2023.
