Many listeners assume the song is about drug addiction, but in a 1995 Dutch television interview Townes said he wrote it right after reading Nikos Kazantzakis's The Last Temptation of Christ. It closes Delta Momma Blues.
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss recorded it on Raising Sand in 2007, and Colter Wall put it on his 2015 EP Imaginary Appalachia.
