Conscious Consumer

The second and final studio album, made seventeen years after the first.
X-Ray Spex, 1995

Released
1995
Label
Receiver

Recorded in 1995 and released that year by Receiver, Conscious Consumer was the first new material the band had made in seventeen years. Lora Logic returned on saxophone and Paul Dean on bass. Jak Airport and B. P. Hurding were replaced by Crispian Mills, credited as Red Spectre, and Paul Winterhart, credited as Pauli OhAirt, who would later play in Kula Shaker. Peter-Paul Hartnett is credited with Japanese backing vocals and a dog howl.

The A.V. Club wrote that the album revived the group's original anti-consumerist stance but tempered it with Styrene's newfound serenity on songs like Prayer for Peace. It was heralded as the first part of a trilogy and was not a commercial success. Promotion ended when Styrene was run over by a fire engine in central London in 1995, fracturing her pelvis.
