Fandango! is the band's fourth album. The first side is live, with its first three tracks recorded at the Warehouse in New Orleans on 12 April 1974. The second side is new studio recordings. Gibbons said the live capture was in the can first and that the half and half format turned out to be a winning combination. Fandango is a dance similar to flamenco.

Thunderbird carries a ZZ Top credit, but the Nightcaps wrote and recorded it first, and the band has conceded the two versions are lyrically and musically identical. The Nightcaps sued, but their claim was dismissed because ZZ Top had registered a copyright in 1975. Heard It on the X is about border blaster radio stations in Mexico. Hill told the Guardian that he, Beard and Gibbons had all listened to the same radio shows, Gibbons in Houston and Hill and Beard in Dallas. Tush was the only single and peaked at number 20, the band's first top 40 single in the United States.

A remastered edition on 28 February 2006 added three live tracks recorded at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey, on 30 August 1980, and was the first CD to use Manning's original 1975 mix.
