Released on 14 March 1988 as the lead single from the album, it was written by all three members. The band say they are particularly proud of it, and it has stayed in their live set. The lyric uses cold weather as a metaphor. A Roland D-50 patch called Staccato Heaven was used on the recording.
It was the band's fourth number one in Norway and reached number five in the UK on the chart of 27 March 1988, their seventh and last UK top five. It was number two in Ireland, three in France and Iceland and seven in West Germany. It did not chart in the United States. Andy Morahan directed the video, shot on the Suffolk coast at Aldeburgh. Melody Maker's Paul Oldfield wrote of a gravity and despondence bigger than Europe, while Cash Box said ethereal, arching vocals lifted the ballad into greatness. On 21 August 2011 a-ha played it at Oslo Spektrum at a national memorial service for the victims of the 2011 Norway attacks. They also played it for MTV Unplugged in 2017.
