Waaktaar wrote the song for the film. The version on the soundtrack was produced by John Barry, and the band later reworked it for Stay on These Roads. Waaktaar has said he loved what Barry added to the track, in particular the string arrangement, which made it start to sound like a Bond song.

Released in the summer of 1987, the single reached number five in the UK and number one in Norway. Steve Barron directed the video, shot on the 007 Stage in London, with scenes from the film projected onto the band. The song is one of their most played in concert and is often extended into a sing-along, as on the 2003 live album How Can I Sleep with Your Voice in My Head. Waaktaar often works the James Bond Theme into his guitar solo. AllMusic's Evan Cater described it as a strong sample of Seven and the Ragged Tiger-influenced Europop. Classic Pop's Steve Harnell called it one of the better song entries in the Bond canon of the 1980s. The Pet Shop Boys also wrote a song for the film that went unused, and reworked it as This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave. The South African band The Narrow covered the song on Travellers in 2005.
