Wow and Grape Jam came out as two albums in separate covers, sold together for one dollar more than the price of a single LP. The package reached number 20 on the Billboard 200, the band's highest chart placing. Recording began in Los Angeles in late 1967, and most of Wow was made in New York in late 1967 and early 1968. Rubinson added string and horn arrangements to many of the songs. Spence's songs on Wow include the roots rocker Motorcycle Irene and Just Like Gene Autry: A Foxtrot, a 1930s-style tune with a spoken introduction by Arthur Godfrey that was cut onto the record to be played at 78 RPM.

Grape Jam was recorded in New York in January and February 1968, with Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper as guests. Spence plays guitar on Never and piano on Boysenberry Jam.
