After the Nightmare Returns tour, Cooper asked Desmond Child to help him make a comeback record. Child produced Trash with a band of John McCurry on guitar, Hugh McDonald on bass, Bobby Chouinard on drums and Alan St. John on keyboards. Guests included Jon Bon Jovi, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, and Joan Jett, Diane Warren, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were among the songwriters.
It reached 2 in Britain and 20 in the US, and sold more than 4.5 million copies. Videos were made for Poison, Bed of Nails, House of Fire and Only My Heart Talkin', and a year-long world tour followed. AllMusic's Alex Henderson gave it four stars as a highly slick and commercial yet edgy pop-metal effort. Rolling Stone ranked it 36 on its list of the 50 greatest hair metal albums.
