A Musical Discovery of India

Music from a stage act at a travel-industry conference in Delhi, and a milestone for Shankar's touring group.

By the late 1970s Shankar's concerts were audio-visual shows that joined orchestra, dancers, lights, costumes and expression, and his later albums were essentially their soundtracks, often commissioned. A Musical Discovery of India grew out of the group's act at the Pacific Asia Travel Association conference held in Delhi, which Scroll called an important milestone for the group. Sa-Re-Ga Machan (1981) came from the launch of the Taj Mansingh in Delhi, 2001 (1984) was commissioned by the tyre company Dunlop, and Temptations (1992) was a contribution to an anti-drugs campaign.
