Walking On pairs Shankar's sitar soundscapes with breakbeat and hip hop. The project began when Alan James, running club nights and working at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham, planned a live project to bring Shankar to Britain. WOMAD booked it, and Real World took it into the studio during Recording Week. Sam Zaman, the DJ and producer known as State of Bengal, was brought in as musical partner. James's liner note adds that Sam Zaman had been listening to Shankar since his early teens and sometimes remembered tunes the composer had forgotten.
Recording took a week for nine tracks, and the album also carries two live tracks, one of them Streets of Calcutta. Shankar died a few weeks after returning to India, and the album carried a tribute from James, who wrote that Shankar opened a door onto possibilities that seemed even more relevant than in the sixties. It came out in 2000.
