Drukqs

A double album of programmed breakbeats, prepared piano and computer-controlled instruments.
Aphex Twin, 2001

Released
22 October 2001
Label
Warp
Producer
Richard D. James

Warp released the double album on 22 October 2001, intended as James's last record under his Warp contract. It runs from meticulously programmed drum and bass breakbeats to ambient, electroacoustic and piano pieces made with computer-controlled instruments, including a modified Yamaha Disklavier. Many titles are in Cornish, for example Jynweythek, which means 'machine', or are coded. James said the title was just a word he made up.

James said he released it to get ahead of a leak after leaving an MP3 player holding 180 unreleased tracks on a plane, and that he hoped listeners would take the tracks they wanted from the two discs. It entered the dance albums chart at number 1 and the UK albums chart at number 22. Reviews were polarised: Rolling Stone's Pat Blashill called it his most irrelevant album to date, while Sasha Frere-Jones wrote in the Rolling Stone Album Guide that it is often spectacular. Metacritic gives it an average of 66 from 21 reviews.
