Richard D. James Album

Ten short tracks pairing jungle-inspired breakbeats with strings and sung voices.
Aphex Twin, 1996

Released
4 November 1996
Label
Warp
Producer
Richard D. James

Released by Warp on 4 November 1996, the album was composed mostly on a Macintosh and took longer to make than his earlier records. James said he sometimes hit the keyboard in the way he wanted a rhythm to sound and then spent four hours moving the notes where he wanted them. He bought a violin at a car boot sale, placed it on a table, played a note and sampled it, and on To Cure a Weakling Child he manipulated his voice to sound like a child giving a lecture. Early copies came with a plastic sachet holding his hair, and the US edition added the Girl/Boy EP as bonus tracks.

It entered the UK dance albums chart at number 7 and the albums chart at number 62, and reached number 20 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. It had sold over 100,000 copies by November 1997, Warp's best seller to that point. Pitchfork's Ryan Schreiber called it 43.5 minutes of pure electronic genius, and Pitchfork ranked it 40th on its 2003 list of the best albums of the 1990s. NME placed it 55th on its 2003 list of the greatest albums of all time.
