Indianola Mississippi Seeds was released in October 1970 on ABC Records. Producer Bill Szymczyk followed the success of The Thrill Is Gone by pairing King with guests including Carole King, Leon Russell and Joe Walsh. It was recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, apart from Go Underground, which was cut at the Hit Factory in New York. Jimmie Haskell arranged the strings and horns. The album reached number 26 on the pop chart.
The title honors the town King called home. The package includes what appears to be a copy of his birth certificate, registered in Indianola, and it won the 1971 Grammy for best album package, awarded to photographer Ivan Nagy and designer Robert Lockart. King once said he thought it was the best album he had done artistically.
