Lam Toro came out on Chris Blackwell's Mango label in 1992 and is credited to Baaba Maal and Daande Lenol. Three producers shared the work: Eric Clermontet on Yela, Toro and Minuit, Simon Booth on Daande Lenol, Hamady Boiro and Ndelorel, and Maal himself on the rest. Godwin Logie remixed Hamady Boiro. Maal wrote all eleven songs. The Irish piper Davy Spillane played uilleann pipes on the record.

In the fRoots critics poll, which had named Djam Leelii the best album of 1989, Lam Toro was named album of the year for 1992. The album was issued in the United States in 1993.
