After the fusion albums Maal returned to acoustic roots on Missing You. John Leckie produced and mixed it, and it was recorded at Studio Nbunk in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal, and at Real World Studios. Seck played guitar and co-wrote one track. Leckie remembered Seck's gentleness and humour, and said he would often have a guitar in the control room and play continuously until asked to stop. The Guardian's obituary of Seck calls it a classic album.
Christgau gave it an A-. He wrote that it was "recorded after dark in the village of Nbunk, Senegal" with "guidance" from Leckie, and called it "the fairest recording ever of all the music this thwarted visionary has in him."
