Black Dots is a demo album of the band's June 1979 session at Inner Ear, in engineer Don Zientara's basement, which held a four-track TEAC tape deck. H.R. sang from the back yard, and the band played straight through its live set of the time. The tapes stayed with Zientara, unmixed, until the band's 1995 break-up, when manager Anthony Countey retrieved them. Sean Green mixed them in June 1996 at Applehead Recording in Woodstock, New York. Eight of the sixteen songs had never been released in any version, among them the title track.

Tom Sinclair of Entertainment Weekly gave it an A and said it could serve as a primer for neophyte punks. A collection of the band's March 1979 Inner Ear recordings, Are You Ready, is due on Trust Records on 6 November 2026.
