Quickness, also known as With the Quickness, was the best-selling Bad Brains album at the time of its release. The band began recording it in 1988 with singer Taj Singleton and drummer Mackie Jayson, and the Hudson brothers returned in 1989, when H.R. replaced Singleton's work with new lyrics and vocals. Earl Hudson is pictured on the cover but does not play on the record. Dr. Know told MTV the title comes from urgency and swiftness.
It mixes funk, hip hop, heavy metal, punk and reggae, and has been described as one of the first groove metal albums, released a year before Prong's Beg to Differ and Pantera's Cowboys from Hell. Pitchfork notes that Dr. Know and Jenifer promoted it on MTV's 120 Minutes and on Headbangers Ball.
