The title nods to Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. Gough said he wanted to capture something about being British or English. He recorded the album twice after discarding a first attempt, and over 25 songs were recorded for twelve places on the final record.

Nothing's Gonna Change Your Mind was the lead single, released on 9 October 2006. Promises was used in the film Henry Poole Is Here, and The Time of Times over the closing credits of Definitely, Maybe. The album reached number 17 in the UK.
