Have You Fed the Fish?
The third album: more guitars, a glossier sound, and his only top ten single.
Badly Drawn Boy, 2002
- Released
- 5 November 2002
- Label
- XL Recordings, Twisted Nerve
The title comes from the question Gough asks his daughter each day, which he said got to sound like one of those words you say too many times and it sounds silly. Some copies of the album carried a competition card for one of five golden fish, which would win the finder a songwriting session with Gough. The prizes were never claimed. The woman on the front cover is Jane Birkin, and her daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg sings on the album.
It reached number 10 in the UK and was certified gold. Its singles were You Were Right (number 9), Born Again (16) and All Possibilities (24). The extra guitars and increasingly mainstream pop sound were not welcomed by every critic.
