Sutton said the band had a single to do and no suitable tracks, so they hired gear and gave themselves ten days to make a 12-inch. About ninety per cent was recorded live. Vocals, some piano, ambient guitar and samples went on afterwards, and the first three and a half minutes are only the distance microphones left up from an earlier jam. A Pentecostal meeting happened to be under way in a back room of the church one night, and the band taped it through the door. The whispered lyric was a reaction to a house track with an Everybody's free chorus that Sutton found nauseating.
Melody Maker named it single of the week. It is included in full on Independency, where it runs 21:15. A reissue of Scum came out in April 2023, with a 21:21 version in its digital edition.
