The Negro Inside Me came out on Mute on 19 October 1993. It was recorded and mixed at E-zee Studios in London, apart from A Perfectly Natural Union, which was done at Mayfair Studios. Adamson produced it, with Atticus Ross adding beats and sounds, Joe Sax on all the saxophones, Seamus Beaghen on Hammond organ and Billy McGee arranging the strings. Frieze counts it, along with The Taming of the Shrewd (1989), among the EPs that punctuate the trilogy of Moss Side Story, Soul Murder and Oedipus Schmoedipus.
Trouser Press called the six-track, album-length release his most accessible recording yet. In the Hammond-heavy jazz-funk of The Snowball Effect it noted the sampling of an answering machine message left by his publicist, and it described the porno-dance Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus as Adamson tackling Serge Gainsbourg two years before Mick Harvey recorded a Gainsbourg tribute album.
