Adamson had just finished Oedipus Schmoedipus when he flew to Los Angeles to work with David Lynch on Lost Highway. Lynch showed him the party scene in which Bill Pullman's character meets Robert Blake's Mystery Man. Adamson thought of a track from the new album and offered it. Lynch said to put it up against the scene, they did, and Lynch said that was it. Adamson said he did not know how such things happen. He has said he scored 35 minutes of the film, whose original score was by Angelo Badalamenti with additional music by Adamson.
An edited version appears on the Lost Highway soundtrack album, which Trent Reznor produced, and the original is on Oedipus Schmoedipus. Pitchfork, reviewing the album, referred to the track as French freakiness. In early 1997, frieze noted that Adamson had just been asked to score additional music for Lynch's film.
