David J and Ash sang lead on four songs. The band had already broken up when it came out on 15 July 1983. It reached number 13, and She's in Parties reached number 26. David J said in a 2015 solo performance that the title came from a time he and Ash were smoking hash in a car and it caught fire, burning from the inside. He described Who Killed Mister Moonlight as a surrealistic ballad inspired in part by the murder of John Lennon.
Ned Raggett, writing in The Quietus in 2013, called it a compelling sprawl at its best, a case for fragmentation as beauty.
