The band wanted to produce it themselves, but arguments over creative direction led them to hire Derek Tompkins. They had a month at Rockfield Studios in Wales and little written beforehand. Murphy described it as an album of experimentation where, with no songs, they made the studio the songwriting environment. The lyrics are more personal than before. David J said All We Ever Wanted Was Everything evokes nostalgic memories of a time of innocence and naive yearning.
It includes a cover of Brian Eno's Third Uncle and a re-recorded Spirit, and the first limited edition came with the live album Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape. It peaked at number 3, their greatest album success. Raggett wrote that, unlike Mask, it was more notable for individual songs than as a whole. Alternative Press named it one of the top ten essential goth albums in 2001.
