Rich Harrison had built the beat before he met Beyoncé, sampling the horn hook of the Chi-Lites' 1970 song Are You My Woman (Tell Me So), which gave Eugene Record a writing credit. When he played it in the studio she wondered whether the bold horn sound was old-fashioned. Harrison wrote the verses and hook in about two hours and played all the instruments on a backing track. The bridge came from Beyoncé, who said she was looking so crazy right now in front of a mirror, and the pair worked out the uh-oh hook together. Jay-Z joined late in production and rapped the verse. The song is in D minor at about 100 beats per minute.
It was the lead single from Dangerously in Love and reached number one in the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland, spending eight weeks atop the Hot 100. Jake Nava directed the video, which won three awards at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. At the 2004 Grammys it won Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration, and Rolling Stone placed it at number 16 on its 2024 list of the 500 greatest songs. Beyoncé first performed it with Jay-Z on Saturday Night Live, and it has been in the set of every one of her headlining tours as of 2025. In 2015 she re-recorded it for the film Fifty Shades of Grey.
