Beyoncé, the producer Detail and Jay-Z wrote it at the end of 2012, and it was recorded at Jungle City and Oven Studios in New York. Detail brought a beat he called Drunk, and she and Jay-Z freestyled their verses, with Timbaland on keyboards. She said it was like a party, that nobody was trying to make a hit and everyone was just having fun. The song is in A flat major at 70 beats per minute. Hype Williams directed the black-and-white video on a beach in Golden Beach, Florida, on 15 August 2013. It went out on iTunes with the album and on Vevo three days later.

It peaked at number two on the Hot 100, behind Katy Perry's Dark Horse, and spent eight weeks in the top ten. It won Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance at the 2015 Grammys, and the video won Best Collaboration at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. Pitchfork's Carrie Battan singled out Beyoncé's ad-libs on the song as some of the most infectious snippets of pop music in 2013, and Rolling Stone ranked it first on its list of the best songs of 2014. Remixes included an official one with Kanye West and a version by James Blake.
