Recorded in five days at the end of 1996, it opened what Callahan calls a trilogy with Knock Knock and Dongs of Sevotion. Jim O'Rourke co-produced and played bass, piano, Hammond organ, hurdy-gurdy and drums. Ex-Con was released as a single in 1997, and Cat Power recorded Red Apples for The Covers Record.
