Eilish largely wrote the album with Finneas, who produced it in his small bedroom studio. Work began in May 2016 with Listen Before I Go, which they re-recorded in spring 2018. They used Logic Pro X, a Universal Audio Apollo 8 interface and Yamaha HS5 monitors, and preferred the bedroom to a professional studio for its intimate feel and what it does to vocals. Rob Kinelski mixed it and John Greenham mastered it, and it was finished in January 2019. The title comes from a line in Bury a Friend. She said the album was inspired in part by lucid dreaming and night terrors. Kenneth Cappello photographed the cover on her birthday in December, in a shoot that lasted 12 hours.

The last three titles, Listen Before I Go, I Love You and Goodbye, form a sentence. Goodbye carries a line from each earlier track except the opener, in reverse order. Seven singles came from it, and Bad Guy was issued with the album as the fifth.

Reception

Metacritic scored it 82 from 21 reviews. Laura Snapes of the Guardian wrote that Eilish "uses intimacy to amplify scares" like a horror auteur. Pitchfork's Stacey Anderson summed it up as gothic, bass-heavy, at turns daring and quite beautiful. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 on 7 April 2019 with 313,000 units, and topped the UK chart. At the 62nd Grammys it won Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Rolling Stone ranked it 397 on its 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums.
