Eilish and Finneas wrote all the material on the original release, and he produced it alone. John Greenham mastered it and Rob Kinelski mixed most of it. It is a bedroom pop and electropop record with R&B and jazz elements. She explained the title partly as an answer to being told to smile: everyone is taught to, and she did not want to look like anybody but herself.
Six singles supported it. Ocean Eyes was re-released as the lead single in November 2016. The EP reached number 14 on the Billboard 200 and number 12 on the UK Albums Chart, and was reissued twice, first with &Burn, a collaboration with Vince Staples, and then with Lovely, with Khalid, and Bitches Broken Hearts. Reviews were generally favorable.
