Talking with the Taxman About Poetry

The second single from Talking with the Taxman About Poetry reached 58 on the UK Singles Chart in October 1986. John Porter produced it and plays bass and slide guitar. Johnny Marr plays electric guitar, and Kirsty MacColl sings. In 2003 the BBC described it, alongside Accident Waiting to Happen, as one of the truly classic pop songs in his catalogue, calling it spiteful.

Listeners to the Australian radio station Triple J voted it number 38 in the 1989 Hottest 100 and number 59 in the 1990 poll. The actor David Tennant chose it as one of his Desert Island Discs in 2009. A demo version, 3:57, is on the second disc of the 2006 reissue of the album.

Live

It is in the recording of Bragg's set at the Glastonbury Festival on 20 June 1987 on the Internet Archive.
