The follow-up to the Grammy winner was highly anticipated and went to the top of the US album chart, and to number 1 in Canada. It was produced by Bobby Colomby and Roy Halee. Hi-De-Ho, from Gerry Goffin and Carole King, reached 14 in the US, and Lucretia MacEvil, written by David Clayton-Thomas, reached 29. Like its predecessor the album drew mostly on other writers, including James Taylor, Richard Manuel, Laura Nyro, Joe Cocker and Steve Winwood, Robert Christgau of the Village Voice wrote that the singing was belching. Ruhlmann of AllMusic called it a convincing, if not quite as impressive, companion to the previous hit.
It was released in June 1970 while the group was away on its State Department tour. Reviews sometimes concentrated on the tour without discussing the music.
