The band recorded in San Francisco from January to April 1971 with the jazz writer and saxophonist Don Heckman as co-producer. Dave Bargeron replaced Jerry Hyman on trombone. They invited Al Kooper to contribute John the Baptist (Holy John). The album peaked at 10 on the Billboard albums chart and went Gold. Go Down Gamblin', which Clayton-Thomas wrote and played guitar on, reached 32, and Lisa, Listen to Me reached 73. William Ruhlmann of AllMusic wrote that the band's cohesion seemed to be disintegrating and that the record ended the period of wide commercial success. David Clayton-Thomas, Dick Halligan and Fred Lipsius all left after it.
