Philips released Outsideinside in August 1968. The title refers to the sessions. The outside sessions took place at Gate Five in Sausalito, at Muir Beach in California and on Pier 57 in New York City. The inside sessions were at A&R Studio, Olmstead Studios and Record Plant in New York City and at Pacific Recorders in San Mateo. Peterson said the label wanted real production this time, the band could not turn its amplifiers up as it wanted in a studio, and the company rented a pier in New York Harbour for a mobile unit to record the basic tracks, with the sweetening done afterward in a studio.

Hank McGill, Jay Snyder, Tony May and Eddie Kramer engineered. The album reached number 90 on the Billboard 200, and the first single, Just a Little Bit, reached number 92 on the Hot 100. Two songs are covers: the Rolling Stones' (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction and The Hunter. Neil Peart wrote that he never forgot the drum pattern in Just a Little Bit.

Reception

Pitchfork's review of the 2003 reissue said Outsideinside turned the band's "stylistic enthusiasm and leathery attitude" into structured songs, and judged it less influential than the debut because it defines classic rock.
