Blue Cheer made their first album in 1967 at Amigo Studios in North Hollywood. Classic Rock reports it was recorded in three days with very little mixing. Abe "Voco" Kesh produced and John MacQuarrie engineered, and John Van Hamersveld took the photography. The record reached number 11 on the Billboard 200, and the single of Summertime Blues, backed with Out of Focus, reached number 14 on the Hot 100.
Side one runs Summertime Blues, B.B. King's Rock Me Baby and Peterson's eight-minute Doctor Please. Side two has Out of Focus, Mose Allison's Parchman Farm under the title Parchment Farm, and Second Time Around, which carries a drum solo by Whaley.
Reception
A Pitchfork review of the 2003 reissue, which paired it with Outsideinside, described Vincebus as "all catharsis and psychedelic mayhem". Spin placed it at number 22 on its list of the 40 greatest metal albums, and The Wire included it in its 1998 list of 100 records that set the world on fire while no one was listening. Classic Rock called it the band's definitive sonic manifesto.
