The album also holds "(If You Don't Want My Love) Give It Back", which Womack recorded three more times, and covers of James Taylor's "Fire and Rain", Ray Stevens' "Everything Is Beautiful" and Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "(They Long to Be) Close to You", on which he speaks a monologue.
The Muscle Shoals rhythm section played on the record, and Womack's brothers sang backing vocals on most tracks. Pam Grier, Janice Singleton and Patrice Holloway sang on "Come l'Amore", "Give It Back" and "Yield Not to Temptation". In 2012 Pitchfork's Ryan Dombal called Communication his 1971 career best.
