Bombino said his mission was to get closer to Africa, and called the record a culmination of everything before it. The band lived in isolation at the studio, owned by the King of Morocco, and worked for about ten days. The songs are about Tuareg identity, language and friendship; Tamasheq is named for the Tuareg tongue, and Deran Deran Alkheir is a wedding song. NPR heard it speaking across centuries. It topped the iTunes world chart and was nominated for the 2019 Grammy for best world music album.
