Bombino knew nothing of the Black Keys before Auerbach approached him. His Tuareg band recorded with Nashville players including Bobby Emmett on keyboards and Russ Pahl on lap steel, and Auerbach himself played bass on Niamey Jam. Most of the lyrics address Tuareg concerns, unity in Adinat, the desert in Her Tenere, water in Aman. It opens with Amidinine.
It debuted at number one on the Billboard world albums chart and made year-end lists at Rolling Stone, Uncut and NPR. Will Hermes in Rolling Stone heard a perfect match of sound and soul; a Montreal reviewer found it uneven and over-polished, faulting the synths and pedal steel.
