Slippery When Wet

Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Desmond Child wrote it, and it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on 29 November 1986, the band's first number one. The chorus tune was taken from Bonnie Tyler's If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man), which had different lyrics. According to Child, they wrote it on the first day of their sessions together.

Child told the Guardian that a title should pull people in, and that art is the tension of opposites. He also said rhymes in a song for stadiums should be as clean as possible, so a crowd can anticipate the next one. The video used all-color concert footage shot at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles by Wayne Isham, hired by manager Doc McGhee, who knew the band needed a video for MTV. The band had been opening for 38 Special and became a headline act after the video debuted.

Cash Box called it a "jackhammer single", and Billboard called it "hard rock, raspy and aggressive". It re-entered the chart at number 29 in 2007 after Blake Lewis sang it on American Idol.
