William Bowers of Pitchfork called it a masterpiece of comic negation, a song that invokes a holocaust, coming kids, hosing and how balls burn. Treble hears in it a funereal warning of one's own mortality, and Stereogum's Michael Nelson wrote that after listening to songs like it, it does not make much sense to fear something so inevitable.
Oldham played it in Hoboken on 7 December 1998, and a 5:45 version is on the live album Summer in the Southeast (2005). Deer Tick's cover appeared in an episode of Hell on Wheels in 2011.
