Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin wrote the song in Reid's basement in Nashville, working on it for more than six months. Shamblin said that when Reid played the melody on the piano in the living room he knew it was the best thing he had been part of. Raitt co-produced the recording with Don Was, with Bruce Hornsby on piano, Tony Braunagel on drums and James "Hutch" Hutchinson on bass. She recorded the vocal in one take.

It was the second single from Luck of the Draw, reaching No. 18 on the Hot 100 and No. 6 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and placing at No. 100 on the 1992 year-end chart. Matt Mahurin directed the video. Mojo ranked it No. 8 on its 2000 list of the 100 greatest songs, and Rolling Stone placed it at No. 339 in 2004 and No. 372 in 2021. Raitt performed it at the 1992 Grammys with only Hornsby accompanying her. She has said of singing it live that it is "almost a sacred moment" when she shares that depth of pain with the audience.
