Shirley Eikhard wrote the opening Something to Talk About. Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin wrote I Can't Make You Love Me. Raitt wrote Tangled and Dark, Come to Me and All at Once herself, and One Part Be My Lover with Michael O'Keefe. Others came from John Hiatt, Paul Brady, Bonnie Hayes and Larry John McNally, and Delbert McClinton sings a duet on Good Man, Good Woman. Looking back in 2022, Alfred Soto of Pitchfork called it the "septuple-platinum follow-up to Nick of Time" and said Something to Talk About was a "well-deserved hit".
